The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, provides
independent and rigorous analysis of global contemporary issues to public and
private international actors. The Graduate Institute is an internationally recognized
institution for higher academic learning and research, with its roots tracing
back to 1927 as one of the first institutes to offer international studies in
Europe. The Graduate Institute offers Master and Ph.D programs in the field
of international relations (economics, history, political science and law) and
development studies as well as a substantial amount of scholarships (200 for
a total student body of 800).
The Graduate Institute is furthermore part of the APSIA Network, which regroups
the world’s most renowned schools of international affairs and is regularly
quoted amongst Europe’s top three institutions specializing in international
affairs. It counts amongst its alumni former UN secretary general Kofi Annan,
Hans-Gert Pöttering (President of the European Parliament), Hernando de
Soto (President of Peru’s Institute for Liberty and Democracy), as well as the
current foreign ministers of Switzerland, Micheline Calmy- Rey, and Mexico,
Patricia Espinosa. The students of the Graduate Institute acquire high level
knowledge and skills preparing them to take up leading positions in the fields
of international affairs and development. As a hub of multilateral diplomacy,
Geneva provides our students with job and internship opportunities in the many
IOs and NGOs that are neighbouring the Institute, such as the WTO, UNHCR, WIPO,
ILO, IRCC, Amnesty International, UN Geneva Headquarters and many more.
